Surroundings & ski slopes

Out of the chalet. Into the mountains.

Here you don’t have to choose between the Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains. Příchovice is the starting point for both: a day on the slopes, a family outing to a viewpoint or a forest walk that’s in no hurry to get anywhere.

Summer, winter and everything in between.

Stone lookout tower near Příchovice

Hvězda · 959 m above sea level

Štěpánka. A walk with a story.

On the summit of Hvězda stands the oldest lookout tower in the Jizera Mountains. Building began in 1847, yet it had to wait until 1892 for its first visitors. A stone tower appears between the trees, and at the top comes the reward: a view over the landscape you’ve come to belong to for a few days.

A lighthouse? Here, in the mountains?

Don’t bother looking for the sea. Look for Jára Cimrman instead – the fictional Czech genius who, so the joke goes, invented almost everything first. At the U Čápa ski area you’ll find his lighthouse (Cimrmanův maják), the Museum of Cimrman’s Era and a forest park. The wooden tower was designed by Martin Rajniš; the museum was founded in 2013. A stop for anyone who loves a good view and a sense of humour that’s just a little bit Czech.

Jizera & Giant Mountains

One stay is never enough.

One day you pick a lookout tower, the next a forest path, and then perhaps Harrachov and the Mumlava waterfall. Or you stay in Příchovice and don’t hurry anywhere at all. It’s the freedom to change your plans with the weather, your mood and the smallest members of the party that makes the mountains a place worth coming back to.

Rainy-day tip

The rack railway and museum in Kořenov.

The Tanvald–Kořenov line has been running since 1902, and with gradients of up to 58 per mille it is the steepest standard-gauge railway in the Czech Republic. Today it is a protected cultural monument. Kořenov station building houses the Rack Railway Museum, and on special excursions a historic rack locomotive takes to the line.

Full-day tip

Harrachov and the Mumlava.

Less than twenty minutes’ drive from the chalet, the Mumlava tumbles almost ten metres over granite steps. Combine the walk to the waterfall with Harrachov – its Glass Museum and ski-jumping hills. In winter, the frozen waterfall is worth the trip in its own right.

A day out, not a race.

Pack a snack, pick a destination and let the journey take care of the rest. The forest park at U Čápa in Příchovice has natural play features and a geopark; for the view, it’s worth the climb up to Štěpánka. For a longer outing, head for Harrachov and the Mumlava; on another day, one of the lookout towers or trails nearby.

Keep one day free. The mountains are lovely even when you just go for a stroll and cook a late lunch back at the chalet.
